Sassbee finishes best to win Monash

Adelaide raider Sassbee finished over the top of his rivals to take out yesterday's listed $100,500 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

Sassbee was first up since finishing second in the Group One Goodwood Handicap in May, and enjoyed the run of the race for jockey Nash Rawillar just off the pace being set by speedsters Danerich and Due Sasso.

Sassbee pulled to the outside and finished best to overhaul the rising nine year old Super Elegant who was gallant in defeat.

The Kelvin Bourke trained eight year old was having his first start in nine months when finishing second, beaten three quarters of a length as he attempted to win a third straight Monash Stakes.

Illusionist who was involved in the early speed battle fought on strongly to cling to third a further two lengths away.

Trainer David Jolly said Sassbee was a very good horse fresh and his $3600 bargain buy would now head to the Manikato without another run.
